How the generator works

    Pick a pack

    Every pack is a themed word list. Tap one and the generator loads its words — no settings to configure first.

    Set the timer

    Sixty seconds is the standard turn. Anything from 30 seconds to five minutes works, and you can change it between rounds.

    Get a random word

    One word fills the screen at a time, drawn in random order so the same pack never plays out identically twice.

    Tap correct or pass

    Correct scores a point and pulls the next word. Pass skips it. The round ends on the timer and the summary lists every word with its result.

Generate words by difficulty

Difficulty comes from the pack you choose. Start a level below where you think the room is — an easy first round warms people up faster than a hard one.

Easy

Single objects and actions with an obvious physical shape. Use these with kids or a group that has never played.

Medium

Two or three gestures strung together. This is where most game nights sit.

Hard

Abstract ideas and multi-word phrases that force the actor to break the clue into pieces.

What makes a good charades word

If you are writing your own list instead, these are the rules that decide whether a round is fun or painful.

A good charades word has a physical shape. “Elephant” works because there is one obvious gesture; “Tuesday” does not, because there is nothing to do with your body. The best words sit somewhere in between recognisable and awkward, which is why situations like “stubbing your toe” beat plain nouns almost every time.

Keep them short. One or two words is the sweet spot — long titles get broken into syllables and the round turns into spelling rather than acting. And keep them universal: an inside joke is only funny if everybody guessing was there.

The generator handles all of this by only dealing words that have been tested in the app, so a round rarely stalls on something impossible.

What is a charades generator?

A charades generator picks a random word for the actor to perform so nobody has to write slips of paper or think of words on the spot. This one also runs the timer and keeps score, so the only job left is acting.

Is this charades generator free?

Yes, and there is no signup or account. 12 packs generate unlimited random words in the browser. The other packs give you a 10-word preview, and the full versions are in the free Charades app for iPhone.

Can I choose the difficulty?

Yes. Difficulty is set by which pack you pick rather than a separate slider. Easy, Animals and Kids are the gentlest; Hard and Funny are the toughest. You can also change the difficulty of any pack by shortening or lengthening the timer.

Does the generator repeat words?

Not within a round. Words are shuffled and dealt one at a time, so a pack plays through before anything comes back around.

Can I use my own words?

Not in the browser version. Custom packs are an app feature — you type in your own words, inside jokes or coworker names, and play them the same way as the built-in packs.

How many players do I need?

Two is enough: one acts, one guesses. The generator does not care about team size, so it works the same for a pair or for a room of twenty split into teams.
